The first time you step into a thermal pool in the Azores, the temperature surprises you. It's warmer than you expected and it smells faintly of the earth — iron, sulfur, something ancient. You look up through the tree canopy and wonder how something this extraordinary isn't more famous than it is.

This guide covers all the thermal bathing options on São Miguel: the famous spots, the quieter ones, what it actually costs, and when to go to avoid the crowds. If you're planning a trip, bookmark this.

Quick Facts

Best options: Poca da Dona Beija (evening soak), Caldeira Velha (natural waterfall), Terra Nostra (botanical garden pool)

Budget: Free (natural pools) to €20 (Terra Nostra)

Best time: Early morning or after 5pm to avoid day-tour groups

What to bring: Old swimsuit (iron stains), flip flops, small towel

Poça da Dona Beija

The most accessible and most popular thermal pool on the island. A series of terraced natural pools on the edge of Furnas, fed by hot spring water and surrounded by thick vegetation. The temperature varies by pool — the upper pools are hottest, the lower ones more comfortable for longer soaks.

Entry costs around €8. It's open late (until 11pm on weekends) and the best time to come is after 6pm when day-tour groups have left. Bring a changing bag because the facilities are basic but functional.

Pro Tip

The iron-rich water stains white swimwear permanently. Bring an old dark swimsuit, or accept that your white bikini is now amber.

Caldeira Velha

The most beautiful thermal experience on the island. A natural waterfall cascades into a warm pool surrounded by tree ferns, mosses, and laurel forest — it looks like something from a nature documentary. The water is cooler than Poça (around 28°C) and the pool is smaller, but the setting is extraordinary.

Located 20 minutes north of Furnas in the Caldeira Velha Natural Monument. Entry €4. Arrive early — the car park fills by 10am on summer weekends. The hike from the car park takes about 15 minutes through dense forest.

Pro Tip

The trail to Caldeira Velha continues upward to Lagoa do Fogo, the high crater lake. If you have 3 hours, combine both — it's one of the best walks on the island.

Terra Nostra Garden (Furnas)

The most elegant option. Terra Nostra is a 19th-century botanical garden with a large thermal pool at its center — amber-colored from the iron content, surrounded by ancient trees and curated planting. Entry (€20 for non-hotel guests) includes garden access and one swim.

The pool itself is larger than you'd expect and the gardens surrounding it contain one of the most impressive collections of tree ferns and exotic species in Europe. It's worth the entry fee on its own merits, even before you get into the water.

If your budget allows, Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is one of the best places to stay in Furnas — guests get unlimited pool access included.

Termas de Ferraria

The most unusual: a hot spring that meets the Atlantic Ocean at low tide. Located on the western coast near Capelas, the thermal water mixes with the cold sea water in a natural rock pool carved into the volcanic coastline. The temperature fluctuates wildly — sometimes it's perfectly warm, sometimes it's just cold ocean. Completely free, completely wild, completely worth it.

Planning Your Visit

For a focused thermal experience, build one full day around Furnas: morning at Caldeiras do Furnas park (steam vents), lunch with cozido das Furnas, afternoon at Poça da Dona Beija or Terra Nostra, evening sunset walk.

For Caldeira Velha: pair it with Lagoa do Fogo on a separate half-day.
