Three days in the Azores isn't ideal — but it's enough to fall in love with the place. The key is to stop trying to see everything and commit to seeing three things properly. This itinerary does exactly that.
This is for the traveler adding São Miguel as a stopover, or someone who can only carve out a long weekend. You won't see the northeast coast or the tea plantations. But you'll see Sete Cidades, you'll soak in Furnas, and you'll leave wanting to come back for longer.
Best time to visit: April – October
How long: 3 full days
Budget: $120–$160/day
Rental car: Essential — book in advance
Day 1 — Sete Cidades
The only day you need to be up before 8am. Drive from Ponta Delgada to Vista do Rei before clouds fill the crater. Walk down into the caldera, circle one of the lakes, and take the coastal road home via Mosteiros for black lava pools and lunch.
Book the only restaurant inside the crater — Restaurante Sete Cidades — for lunch. Simple menu, exceptional views, and the kind of meal you remember.
Day 2 — Furnas
Pre-book the cozido das Furnas at Tony's (order by phone the evening before). Morning at the Caldeiras park and a walk around the steaming lake. Afternoon: drive to Caldeira Velha thermal waterfall. Evening: dinner in the village.
Day 3 — Lagoa do Fogo & Ponta Delgada
Start with Lagoa do Fogo — the high crater lake with no crowds and total silence. Then drive back to Ponta Delgada, walk the waterfront, shop the mercado, and have a final lunch at the harbour before flying out.
